Excel Online is a light version of Excel and runs in your web browser so you don't need to install any software to use it. You won't need Sharepoint or an Office 365 subscription to access the free version of Excel Online.
At the new Office.com, you can use basic versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote for free in your browser. They're the same Microsoft Office apps you're used to, only they run online and are 100% free.
Excel for the web is Excel, but in your web browser. You can access it from any device, anywhere. And better yet, it's free for your personal use! (If you need to use it for a business, you can access it with a Microsoft 365 subscription.)

Start a new workbook in Excel for the web Sign in to OneDrive. Click the folder where you want to add a new workbook. Click Create, and then click Excel workbook. Excel for the web opens in edit mode. Tip There's no need to save your changes. Excel for the web saves your workbook automatically while you work on it.

Using Microsoft Excel and other core Office programs is free via the web, and all you'll need is a Microsoft account. Head over to Office.com and click 'Sign in' to enter your details. If you don't yet have an account, choose 'Sign up for the free version of Office' and follow the instructions.

You can download Microsoft's revamped Office mobile app, available for iPhone or Android devices, for free. Released in 2020, it combines Word, Excel and PowerPoint in one app. While the app itself is free, its premium features are not.
