With Office 27 Microsoft introduced a set of new file formats based on XML encoding of all file content needed for spreadsheets word processing documents presentations etc. These file formats superseded the old proprietary formats (.xls .doc .ppt etc.) and were negotiated as part of an international standards settingmittee of which Microsoft was one member. The new file formats contain a folder structure with small files covering every detail. This folder structure is thenpacted in a .zip archive and given a four letter file extension like .xlsx. If you rename the file and change the file extension to .zip you can reverse the process and see the inner details of the file. The folder structure goes several layers deep. You can view it in Notepad but it is much easier to read in an XML viewer. The screenshot below shows a small part of the XML file for worksheet Sheet1 three levels down from the top of the archive. Microsoft published full specifications for each of the new file s including .xlsx spreadsheet files. Anybody who wants to build a file reader or file writer for the XML file formats is wee to do so but be warned that the .xlsx file specification is well over 3 pages s%5bMS-XLSX% .

You would need Excel 27 or higher version for full usage. If the need is to just view it you may download the viewer from Microsoft site.

Ask yourself why you are trying to open it. If it just arrived in a random email maybe you be safer not to. If it a download maybe there a choice of formats. If there CSV or XLSX maybe you can open CSV. If there JPEG or TIFF maybe you can open JPEG. Sometimes you can open a -based format like XML in a simple editor like notepad. Sometimes that perfectly reasonable; you can view a program source code like .c or .ftn or .pl even if you canpile and run it. Otherwise youll have to find something that can open it. For instance .DWG probably requires an AutoCAD viewer or .WRL requires a VRML viewer. That an entire software suite that you have to learn how to use.
